Wood Painting in Worcester, MA
Trim, railings, porches, columns, window sashes and millwork, inside and out. Soft wood repaired, bare wood primed, and finished to hold up to New England weather.
Wood is where paint fails first
On most New England houses the siding holds up and the wood around it does not. Railings, porch floors, window sills and the bottom of door casings take the most water and the most sun, and wood moves with every change in temperature. Paint on wood only lasts when the wood under it is sound, dry and primed. That is where we put the time.

What we paint
- Exterior trim. Corner boards, casings, fascia, rakes and soffits, caulked at every joint that can take on water.
- Porches and railings. Columns, balusters, handrails and porch ceilings, including the three-story porches on Worcester triple-deckers.
- Windows and doors. Sashes, sills and wood doors, painted so they still open and close cleanly.
- Interior millwork. Baseboards, crown, wainscoting, built-ins and stair parts in a smooth, durable enamel.
How a wood painting job runs
Scrape and repair
Loose paint is scraped back to a sound edge. Soft or rotted wood is dug out and filled with epoxy, or cut out and replaced when the damage goes too deep.
Sand and prime
Edges are feathered so old paint lines do not show, and every bare spot gets an oil-based or bonding primer that seals the grain against moisture.
Caulk and finish
Joints are caulked, then the wood gets two finish coats in a product made for its exposure, brushed where the detail calls for it.
Older homes and lead paint
Much of the wood trim in Worcester County was painted before 1978, and older layers may contain lead. Scraping and sanding on those surfaces is done with lead-safe prep and cleanup. Why paint peels on older New England trim.
Paint or stain?
Paint protects and hides; stain shows the grain. Weathered trim and previously painted wood are usually best painted. Decks, fences and wood you want to look like wood are better stained. See wood staining.

Wood painting questions
Do you repair rotted trim before painting?
Yes. Small soft spots are filled with epoxy and larger rotted sections are replaced, so the new paint goes on solid wood.
When is the best time to paint exterior wood?
Roughly May to October, on dry days when temperatures stay above the paint's minimum overnight. Interior millwork can be done any time of year.
Can you paint stained wood?
Yes, with the right prep. Stained or varnished wood is cleaned, scuffed and primed with a bonding primer so the paint grips.
